Does Porn Lower Testosterone? What Evidence Shows

Hormone fluctuations are not testosterone deficiency—and the viral day-seven study was retracted.

Does porn lower testosterone? Current evidence does not show that watching porn causes persistent low testosterone. Sexual arousal and masturbation can produce short-term hormone changes, but those fluctuations are not the same as clinical testosterone deficiency.

Short answer: no strong evidence shows that porn chronically lowers testosterone—or that quitting porn creates a lasting testosterone boost.

If you have symptoms of low testosterone, use proper morning blood tests with a clinician. Do not diagnose a hormone disorder from libido, erections, energy, or internet claims alone.

This article is general education, not medical advice. Porn use can still be problematic without changing testosterone. Treat impaired control as a behavioral issue and suspected hypogonadism as a medical issue.

What the studies actually measured

Direct research on pornography and testosterone is limited. A 2021 observational study tested 568 male Chinese university students. It found associations between some pornography-use measures and several reproductive hormones—but not evidence that porn caused low testosterone. The sample was narrow, nearly everyone had used porn, and the design captured one point in time.

A newer 2026 study examined hair testosterone, cortisol, and PPU in men. It reported a relationship between testosterone and PPU only under certain cortisol levels. The authors noted that pornography and sexual activity might themselves affect hormones and that their study could not determine direction.

Neither study supports the simple claim “porn drains testosterone.” Association is not cause, and testosterone varies with time of day, health, sleep, nutrition, weight, medication, illness, and laboratory conditions.

Masturbation, abstinence, and the famous day-seven claim

ClaimWhat evidence supports
Every ejaculation lowers testosteroneSmall studies show short-lived hormonal responses, not lasting depletion.
Seven days of abstinence raises testosterone 145.7%The study behind this viral number was retracted. It should not guide health decisions.
NoFap permanently boosts testosteroneNo robust evidence establishes a sustained increase from porn or masturbation abstinence.

A 2021 randomized crossover pilot studied eight healthy young men. Masturbation may have changed free testosterone during the short testing window, but total testosterone and hormonal ratios showed no meaningful change. Eight people cannot establish a long-term rule.

An older study compared the hormonal response to masturbation before and after three weeks of abstinence. It found no change in the acute neuroendocrine response to orgasm, though baseline testosterone was higher after abstinence. The study was small and does not demonstrate a durable health benefit.

Why porn problems can feel like “low T”

Low energy, reduced libido, erection difficulty, poor concentration, and low mood are real symptoms—but they have many possible causes. Problematic porn use may contribute indirectly by displacing sleep, exercise, relationships, or daily structure. Anxiety and depression can affect the same areas. None proves that testosterone is low.

Porn can also become strongly associated with a specific context or type of stimulation. That is a behavior and arousal question, not automatically an endocrine disorder. The latest review of porn and sexual dysfunction found that frequency alone was not a strong predictor; problematic use and insecurities mattered more.

When to get testosterone tested

The Endocrine Society says hypogonadism requires symptoms plus consistently low testosterone. Diagnosis normally uses at least two early-morning blood tests. One afternoon result, an online quiz, or how you feel after a relapse is not enough.

Known contributors include disorders of the testes, pituitary gland, or brain; obesity; sleep disorders; type 2 diabetes; chronic illness; anabolic steroid use; and some medications. A clinician can interpret results and investigate the cause.

Do not start testosterone replacement or “boosters” to fix porn use. Testosterone therapy has real indications, risks, fertility implications, and monitoring requirements. It does not teach control over a repeated behavior.

What to do if porn is the problem

You do not need a hormone theory to change a behavior that is costing you time or control. Track the repeat window, move devices, add restrictions before the urge, and prepare a replacement action. Measure sleep, mood, relationships, concentration, and control—not a promised hormonal “superpower.”

If erections are the main concern, read what evidence says about porn and erectile dysfunction. If repeated use feels out of control, start with the practical quit-porn plan.

Common questions

Does ejaculation lower testosterone?

Research finds short-term hormonal fluctuations around sexual activity, not evidence that ejaculation causes persistent testosterone depletion.

Does quitting porn increase testosterone?

No strong evidence shows that quitting porn creates a lasting testosterone increase. Quitting may still improve time use, sleep, focus, or sense of control.

How do I know whether testosterone is low?

Symptoms alone are not enough. A clinician normally confirms suspected hypogonadism with symptoms, medical evaluation, and at least two early-morning blood tests.
