How to Block Porn in Incognito Mode: Fix the Gaps
Check extension permissions, add filtering and test with a harmless page.
Your blocker works in a normal window. Open Incognito, and the same site loads. Start by checking whether your extension has permission to work there.
To block porn in Incognito mode, enable your blocking extension in private windows or use an adult-content DNS filter. Test the private window separately.
DNS is the service that turns a web address into a server address. A filter at that layer can reject adult domains before they load.
How to block porn in Incognito mode on Chrome
For an existing blocking extension on desktop Chrome, Google gives this route:1
- Open
chrome://extensionsin your address bar. - Find your blocker and select Details.
- Switch on Allow in incognito, if the extension supports it.
- Check its site permissions and configured block list.
Only grant private-window access to an extension you trust. Review what it can read and its privacy policy before enabling it.
If your blocker lets you add a domain, temporarily block example.com. Check that harmless page in both window types, then remove the test rule.
This tests whether the extension runs there. It does not prove that its adult-content list catches every site.
Add a filter when an extension is not enough
On desktop Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Security. Under Use secure DNS, select the custom-provider option.2
For Cloudflare's adult-content and malware filter, enter:3
https://family.cloudflare-dns.com/dns-query
Choose the family endpoint specifically. Cloudflare's ordinary resolver has no adult-content filtering. Encryption protects the lookup; the chosen provider determines what gets filtered.
This Chrome setting covers lookups Chrome sends through that provider. It does not configure every app or browser on your device.
On a managed device or with parental controls enabled, this option may be unavailable. Ask the administrator about filtering instead.
Already using a managed filter or an accountability service? Check its instructions before replacing its DNS settings. Switching providers can disconnect that service.
Test private browsing without opening porn
Cloudflare provides a harmless adult-category test domain.3 Open it in a normal window and then in Incognito.
With its family filter active, the test domain should be blocked. A connection error can be the expected result; a branded block page is not required.
Confirm an ordinary site still loads too. A broken connection that stops everything is not evidence that filtering works.
If the test loads normally, recheck the custom address and whether Chrome retained your setting. Consult your filter provider if the result remains unclear.
Repeat the check for other browsers you use. One successful Chrome test tells you nothing about a separate browser's settings.
What about phones and other gaps?
The extension steps above are for desktop Chrome. Its phone “Add to Desktop” option installs an extension on your computer, not inside mobile Chrome.1
For phone setup, use our Android guide or iPhone guide. Check private tabs and both Wi-Fi and mobile data afterward.
Domain filtering cannot pick individual explicit posts out of an otherwise allowed social site. Use that app's content controls or restrict the app itself.
If you control every setting, you can still undo the setup. A separate blocker passcode may add another pause before that decision.
Once the checks pass, stop testing with real sites. Have something else ready to do when you close the window.
