How to Block Porn on Windows: Every Browser, One Setting

Windows can block porn across every browser without installing an extension.

The built-in family filter only covers Edge. A DNS filter covers Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and private windows at the same time.

The right layer matters more than the brand on the blocker.

The Windows 11 setup

1. Open Start, then Settings.
2. Open Network & internet and select the connection you use, Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
3. Find DNS server assignment and click Edit.
4. Change Automatic to Manual, then turn on IPv4.
5. Enter the two addresses below and click Save.

Cloudflare keeps current steps for Windows 10 and 11 in its official setup guide. If IPv6 is on, add its family-filter addresses too. Otherwise one route may still use an unfiltered resolver.

Why not use Microsoft Family Safety?

Family Safety works when another Microsoft account supervises the PC.

Microsoft's own support page states the limit: its web filter works only in Edge. If you use Chrome or Firefox, you must block those browsers or the filter becomes a suggestion.

DNS is simpler for an adult blocking his own computer. It follows the network connection, so every normal browser asks the same filtered service where a site lives.

It still cannot remove explicit posts inside Reddit, X, or another mixed platform. The domain is safe and explicit at the same time, so DNS cannot tell the posts apart.

The admin account is the hole

An administrator can replace both DNS addresses in under a minute. A VPN or a browser with its own secure DNS may route around them too.

This is not proof that blockers do not work. Research points to using them early, before the urge shows up.¹ They remove the easy path and buy time.

The mistake is asking a setting you control to become a setting you cannot control.

Turn one minute into a real barrier

Create a standard Windows account for daily use. Let someone you trust keep the administrator password. Test software updates, backups, and work apps before you sign out of the admin account.

Put the same family DNS on your router too, then let someone else keep that password.

If you keep every password, define the consequence in advance. Turning off the filter, enabling another DNS service, or installing a VPN triggers a pact charge. A clear if-then plan is more likely to survive pressure than a promise to be stronger next time.²
