Freedom App Review: Great Cross-Device Blocker, Weak Recovery Tool

This Freedom app review has a simple verdict: Freedom is excellent at closing the same digital escape route across several devices, but it is a focus blocker—not a porn-recovery program.

What happens when an urge hits?

If a Freedom session is already active, a blocked app cannot open and a blocked website cannot load. That interruption removes immediate access and creates time for a different response. This is more concrete than a panic button that merely opens breathing instructions or motivational copy.

If no session is active, however, Freedom cannot anticipate the urge. You must start a session yourself. Recurring and always-active schedules are therefore more useful for predictable high-risk hours than relying on a decision made at the worst moment.

Freedom provides no accountability report. Nobody is automatically told what you tried to access, and the app does not deliver therapy, coaching, or recovery lessons.

Locked Mode is strong—with planned exits

Premium includes Locked Mode, which prevents editing active blocklists, deleting devices, changing the account timezone, or freely ending a session. Freedom updated the feature on September 4, 2026 so users can permanently remove the weekly Early Exit and daily mobile Session Break.

That makes strict sessions harder to abandon than older reviews suggest. Configure the escape options before starting: Locked Mode cannot be selected after a session begins. Overblocking work, banking, or communication tools can leave you stuck until the timer ends.

iPhone uses two different blockers

On modern iOS, Freedom uses Apple Screen Time controls to stop selected apps from opening—even offline. Website blocking can use a local VPN profile across browsers and many apps. The profile makes block/no-block decisions on the phone; Freedom says it neither sends traffic to its servers nor stores browsing logs.

A domain block may stop an app from loading content without stopping the app itself. For a complete app barrier, select the app through the Screen Time-based list. Those selections must be configured locally on each device rather than from the web dashboard.

Freedom price and free plan

The free plan supports unlimited devices, custom blocklists, desktop app blocking, focus sounds, and immediate sessions up to two hours. It excludes recurring schedules, future sessions, longer blocks, and Locked Mode.

Current US pricing is $8.99 monthly or $39.99 yearly. Freedom also displays a promotional $99.50 lifetime offer; its standard lifetime value is shown as $199. Only the annual plan includes a seven-day Premium trial, and offers can differ by app store or region.

Is Freedom good for quitting porn?

As a barrier, yes. It is especially useful when access shifts between devices. As a complete recovery system, no. It does not replace a plan for urges, support, sleep, stress, or the reasons the behavior repeats.
